What is osmosis?

It is the capillary or larger and deeper cracking of the gelcot (bony) layer on the outer wall of a fiberglass structure in contact with the air, as a result of the penetration of moisture and water into the fiberglass layers and causing the fiberglass structure to rot.


For a complete osmosis treatment, the top cot (gel coat) must be completely removed from the surface, then the boat is cleaned of salts and other dirt, and then the washing process is carried out using high pressure and steam.


The cleaned laminated surface is checked regularly and the boat is left to dry after making sure that it is free of all dirt. If necessary, a dehumidifier is placed in the vessel. This important drying process is a long one, any structural problems can be identified and repaired using epoxy resin and fiber if necessary.

Osmosis, How to avoid?

Osmosis can be detected early and its occurrence can be delayed with annual periodic maintenance.

You can take a very effective safety measure against the formation of osmosis with the following applications;

  • Take your boats ashore at least 4-5 days every year and do their annual maintenance.
  • Üzerlerindeki eski zehirli boyayı iyice inceltin, yeni zehirli boya ile uygulama yapın.
  • Thin the old antifouling paint on them thoroughly, and apply with the new antifouling paint.
  • Cracks, fiber throwing, etc. around keel, rudder, bow thruster, water intake, and throws. Examine situations if there are cracks, and repair them by drying them thoroughly.
  • Have the cracks on the bottom of the boat repaired by drying them well before going into the sea.
  • In the sea, do not clean the poisonous paint that is dirty and caking on the bottom of the boat by diving with spatulas and metal tools.
